The steel Málmiðjan uses for cladding is of a high quality grade. |
Málmiðjan's production is built on powerful, modern equipment that enables the company to guarantee quality, efficiency and reliable delivery. The factory houses production machinery that forms integrated production lines for cladding and ventilation solutions. This allows Málmiðjan to offer its customers a wide range of made-to-measure solutions quickly and efficiently.
The company's product range consists of three profiles: standard corrugated (18/76), small corrugated (8/32) and trapezoidal (24/136), produced in 8 colours as well as uncoloured. The raw material comes from Baosteel, the largest and most advanced steel producer in the world. The steel is hot-dip galvanised with an aluminium-zinc-magnesium coating of 180 g/m², corresponding to a thickness of roughly 20–22 µm on each side. The magnesium treatment gives greater corrosion protection than conventional corrugated steel and is particularly well suited to Icelandic conditions.
Málmiðjan offers corrugated steel both coloured and uncoloured, with anti-fingerprint protection. The coloured material is primed and finished with a PVDF coating applied over the aluminium-zinc-magnesium layer in a 2/2 system, which protects the steel further against weathering and corrosion. Sheet lengths can be ordered to measure as required. Customers can place an order directly in Málmiðjan's online shop, choose individual components and see prices. The customer builds up the order in a basket and sends it to Málmiðjan, which then confirms it and lets the customer know once the goods are ready.
Main types:
Cassette cladding
Pan cladding
Mock standing seam cladding
Standing seam cladding
Flat cladding
Custom-formed cladding
Cladding produced directly from coils is generally more cost-effective than cladding produced from sheets, as the material is used more efficiently and production is more streamlined.
Cladding from Málmiðjan is manufactured to exact lengths and labelled with barcodes. On site, the cladding contractor can simply scan a barcode to identify a given part or locate it on the building. This makes installation on site simpler, faster and safer.
Flashings are part of both the preparation and the final finishing of roofing work, wall cladding and the detailing around doors and windows. They are produced either before cladding work begins or once it has been completed, in which case the last pieces of the finishing often have to be made to measure.
Málmiðjan manufactures every flashing that belongs to the job when customers buy steel cladding. We make a point of delivering all the flashings together with the cladding, should the customer prefer that, to keep installation efficient.
Málmiðjan also manufactures aluminium flashings for contractors and others who prefer them, whether from sheets or from coils. Because Málmiðjan forms flashings directly from coils, considerable gains are made in both material usage and production. Flashings made from coils are therefore more cost-effective than flashings made from sheets.
Flashings from Málmiðjan are labelled with a barcode, so the cladding contractor on site can simply scan the barcode on the flashing to identify it or locate it in the building. There is also no need to cut the flashing on site, which saves a great deal of time and cost and reduces the risk of damage to the flashing itself or to the glazing.

Málmiðjan has invested in a fully automatic duct machine that forms two types of assembly flange from coil material, 20 mm flanges and 30 mm flanges. The machine also locks the ducts together, so they come off the production line fully assembled.
The ducts are sold with integral flanges. During manufacture the flanges are formed by folding up the material at the ends of the duct, so that the duct and its flanges become a single piece with no joints. This makes the ducts tighter and frees them of the protruding screw ends that collect dirt on conventional ducts, and it saves the work of fixing flanges to the duct ends on site. Ducts with integral flanges of this kind meet air tightness class D to the DW/144 standard and are the only ducts in Iceland that do.
Málmiðjan manufactures edged ventilation ducts from height: 100 mm x width: 150 mm up to height: 2,500 mm x width: 2,500 mm. The ducts are 1,390 mm long with a 20 mm flange and 1,350 mm long with a 30 mm flange. The material thickness of the galvanised steel depends on the size of the duct and is available in 0.6 mm, 0.8 mm, 1 mm and 1.2 mm. Loose flanges are sold separately for when ducts need to be shortened.
The company's website shows a broad range of ducted fittings, such as bends, reducers, transition pieces and more. Málmiðjan manufactures ventilation pipes in diameters from 100 mm up to 1,600 mm. Pipes 3 m long are standard, but pipes can be ordered in lengths of up to 6 metres. The material thickness of the galvanised steel depends on the size of the pipe and is available in 0.6 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm and 1.2 mm.
Fixings for installing ventilation pipes can be ordered from Málmiðjan alongside the order for the pipes themselves.
